Dusk comes early in winter,
and the hayloft, though full,
too cold for the cousins
to play hide and seek.
The barn cats prefer
their domain secure.

of the stalls occupied
as the accident mending
the fences last spring
now dictates what is possible.
They must sell off acreage
to cover the losses.
