No Snow

Driving the back roads

to find some photos,

listening in on the radio,

a frightening study

on childhood suicide –

two despairs

leading distress

in our youth:

the climate crisis

and blocked access

to upward mobilty.

Have we been listening

to the cries?

It’s the dead of winter

and there is no snow,

yet the 1% can fly north

to find it.

January Thaw

Temperatures

hover above freezing

through the night

four, five, maybe six days.

The biome lifts a weary eye

awakened from deep

frozen slumber.

Deer hooves sink in mud.
